Batu Ferringhi was a sleepy fishing village on the northern coast of Penang Island in Malaysia until the 1970s, but in recent years it has expanded to become a destination for travelers who have fallen in love with the beauty of its 2.5 miles of sandy beaches. Pirates created the first settlement in the late 16th century, which later became an international trading post for the spices, jewels, and gold you can still find in local shops and markets.

Batu Ferringhi is located just seven miles from the center of George Town, the capital of Penang, and yet it feels like it could be much farther away. A single road through the town links most accommodations and apartment complexes, so there’s little chance of getting lost. Naturally, the beaches are a hive of activity during the day, and people on parasails and jet skis whizz through the waters of the Malacca Strait. As the sun goes down, the thrum migrates inland to the night market, where food stalls serve local delicacies and vendors sell traditional batiks, crafts, and souvenirs.

The tropical climate of Penang Island is constant all year round. Temperatures range from pleasantly warm to hot, and don’t fluctuate much. The primary difference between seasons is the amount of rain the area receives; the rainy season begins in April and goes until October. Most of that rain comes in heavy short showers, leaving the air humid, so if you’re visiting during that time, you’ll want to pack lightweight, breathable clothing as well as an umbrella. The most popular months for travelers are November, which is near the end of the rainy season, through February. Many of the significant events on Penang Island take place in winter, such as the Penang International Container Art Festival in January, when street artists from around the world show off their work on shipping container installations throughout the region.

Tropical Spice Garden

Southeast Asia’s first Tropical Spice Garden in George Town is an eight-acre oasis of scents. Trails allow you to meander through the gardens, passing waterfalls and streams as well as structures made of recycled materials. The garden also offers Malay cooking classes, where you can learn to prepare meals that incorporate fresh spices.

TeddyVille Museum

The TeddyVille Museum in Batu Ferringhi holds Malaysia’s largest collection of teddy bears. The toy bears have been collected from all around the world, some dating back to the early 20th century. Through its exhibits the museum weaves together the history of teddy bears with the history of Penang. If you get inspired by the collection, the museum gives you the opportunity to make your own bear.

Night Market

As the sun goes down, the Batu Ferringhi Night Market comes alive. Stallholders and vendors set out their wares every evening, selling a wide variety of fashionable goods, local souvenirs, and artwork. Penang is famous for the quality of its street food, and you’ll find local classic dishes like prawn and beef noodles and deep-fried whole fish.
