The Best Charleston History Tour-10am
As the only Airbnb experience in Charleston with over 1800 Five-Star reviews, I promise you're going to learn more about history on this tour than on any other tour in this town. From modern-day Charleston, to how the city came to be, even mind-blowing facts about everything from Slavery to Santa Clause. But... we start by discussing what's important to you about history. What you like, and what you hope to learn. This allows me to focus the conversation where you want. I use a story format and I ask you a lot of questions to spur discussion. I'll walk you down the path of Charleston in a funny, interesting, sometimes irreverent way. I'm not going to sugar-coat anything or drone on about names and dates you won't remember. I will teach you things you did not know, and challenge things you think you know. We'll start at Waterfront Park and head south to the famous Charleston battery. We'll see some amazing sights and have some fascinating discussions about the very colorful history of the early fort of Charles Towne. When we’re finished we’ll end up very close to where we started, the proud new owners of the most valuable souvenir you can take home from your trip – knowledge. So come on ya'll, this tour ain't gonna book itself! :) (Note: Airbnb limit is 10 people. If the tour shows full, you can try booking directly on our website at Chucktown Tours)

Is this a walking brew tour with a side of ghosts or a ghost tour with a side of brews? Guests will begin to understand why/how ghostly activity can take place after particular circumstances of love, tragedy, and horror. Eventually the group will make its way over to the relative safety of another bar. The tour will wind down at a hauntingly beautiful local park to hear about one of the first female serial killers. Strong Women of the South History Tour
This tour is an exploration of historical Charleston from the perspective of the founding mothers and women of every color who contributed to our Great American Dream. Along the way, you will discover the beautiful truth: Charleston is the matriarchal capital of the western world, a city once owned and controlled by women. Rated as a top Airbnb experience by Charleston Weddings Magazine, this tour is perfect for bachelorettes, couples, locals, and tourists who are looking for something more than a generic city tour. Our exploration begins at the alleged execution site of America's First Female Serial Killer. We stand in the spot where she met her fate and hear her story. Then, you get to decide: was she really a serial killer or a woman protecting her rights! Next, we visit the homes and sites of the “Old Maids," Women’s Rights Activists, Printers, Artisans, Madams, Shopkeepers, and Plantation owners while discovering their contributions and conundrums, all written over by modern history. Together, we will roll back time, and see the world from the perspective of women in their time. Last, we visit the homes and shops of the women who built this great city. We will hear their stories in the contemporary voice of their times. Together, we will smash the myth of the "Fainting Southern Belle," the "Woman behind the man," and Chattel Slavery.

Nennella Sailing on Charleston Harbor
Nennella Sailing offers year-round sunset and daytime charters on a classic 1964 Pearson Vanguard 32-foot sloop. Only about 400 of these yachts were built. Nennella is No. 109. When these boats were made, sailors navigated the seas using paper charts, sextants and the stars above. Step onto the boat -- with her high bow and raised transom, full keel, original spruce boom, and teak-lined cockpit -- and get unstuck in time: for three hours you will be transported, literally and metaphorically, across the waters of Charleston Harbor and through the history of one of the most fascinating cities in the United States. First settled in 1670, Charleston became the epicenter of rice production during the antebellum period, and the most significant port of entry in North America of the transatlantic slave trade. Here is where determined American Patriots defeated the mighty British Navy in the Battle of Sullivan's Island. Here is where the first shots of the Civil War rang out. In this harbor Robert Smalls commandeered the Confederate transport ship CSS Planter and piloted it and its enslaved passengers to freedom. Here the courageous 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment fought the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. The history is rich, troubling, fascinating. Learn about it, as well as the details of contemporary life in Charleston, aboard the classic sailing yacht Nennella!

One Bar & Tarot Cards
Join us, and learn the game of connections and communication through tarot, and explore the higher bonds between our spirits, our souls, and the occult. Tarot-like cards first appeared in 15th century Italy. The oldest surviving tarot cards are the 15 or so Visconti-Sforza tarot decks painted in the mid-15th century for the rulers of the Duchy of Milan. The earliest evidence of a tarot deck used for fortune-telling comes from an anonymous manuscript from around 1750. Jean-Baptiste Alliette was the first to issue a tarot deck specifically designed for occult purposes around 1789. In the modern Rider–Waite tarot deck, pull the Empress card, and you just might be the alpha female at the table. Strong, independent, and smart: you command the room. But, pull the Wheel of Fortune, and you might be in for a change: for better or for worse. Only you can answer that question. So join a group of new friends at a local bar to experience a personalized tarot reading. Learn something new about yourself and your fellow group members, and come away from the experience with a new outlook on the future.

Your guide to Charleston

What are some of the best neighborhoods in Charleston?

Downtown, also known as the Peninsula, is packed with action: shopping, dining, events, and historic attractions. While it does attract out-of-town visitors with its historic mansions, ghost stories, horse-drawn carriages, and lively energy, it’s also where many locals hang out — with plenty of walkable neighborhoods offering their own spins on Lowcountry hospitality.

King Street

This part of the Historic District often gets pinned as the place to enjoy upscale shopping, but it’s also an extremely walkable (and beloved) part of the city to grab drinks, catch live music, and enjoy some of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants. On Saturdays, don’t miss the Charleston Farmers Market for fresh fare and locally made arts and crafts.

Ansonborough

While not technically downtown, its close proximity to King Street, Marion Square, and the bustling City Market makes it easy to get to for those who want to enjoy the grandeur of the Historic District in a quieter setting. Beautiful homes are nestled between oak trees strewn with Spanish moss, and there are still plenty of places to grab a 5-star bite, or check out galleries and boutiques. It’s also where you can find lush gardens.

Harleston Village

Students, families, professors, and young professionals love this area, in part because it’s within walking distance to the College of Charleston. The 10-acre Colonial Lake Park is a favorite place to unwind, while the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art and Library Society (one of the first of its kind in the United States) are hot spots for exhibits and events.

Cannonborough/Elliotborough

While they are technically two neighborhoods, most residents would consider them one. This revitalized area of downtown is where to come for a glimpse into today’s Charleston: a place for classic Southern cooking and Victorian homes as much as new housing development, global cuisine, and thriving independent businesses.

What do locals recommend doing?

Spend the day on Folly Island

Locals and out-of-towners don’t mind sharing here, where you can take surfing lessons, a dolphin cruise, or just relax on Folly Beach.

Walk (or jog, or bike) the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge

The iconic bridge that swoops over Cooper River is a favorite local spot for a walk, jog, or bike ride. The bridge spans about 2.5 miles, connecting Charleston to the nearby suburb of Mount Pleasant, where you’ll find fresh seafood, local dives, and fun fishing outings in the Shem Creek area.

Spend time in the West Ashley suburb

Head out to get some quintessential South Carolina barbecue, and stroll the neighborhoods of Avondale and River Terrace for gorgeous green spaces.

What are important historical landmarks in Charleston?

History is down every cobblestoned alley and extends to the rivers and marshes of this Lowcountry city founded in 1670. Here’s some of the most important historical things to do in Charleston.

Visit the Boroughs of Charleston

The Boroughs — Cannonborough/Elliotborough, Radcliffeborough, Ansonborough and Mazyk-Wraggborough — are home to important landmarks, including the Aiken-Rhett House Museum, that educate on what life was like here in the 18th and 19th centuries. Set to open in 2022, the International African American Museum sheds light on the history and ancestry of the African Americans of South Carolina (and beyond) with exhibits, a family center where people can trace their genealogy, and a memorial garden, among other innovative programs in Radcliffeborough.

Take a ferry to Fort Sumter

This is the site where the Civil War began, and a national historical park shrouded in significant American history best told by a park ranger, or a local historian as your guide. You can reach the monument via ferry at Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center in Charleston or Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant.

Experience the French Quarter

This area, and the neighboring South of Broad, host some of Charleston’s most known attractions such as Rainbow Row, the Battery, White Point Garden, historic mansions, and more. If it’s your first time in Charleston, a historic walking tour around here is an important and fascinating introduction to Charleston’s past. For an immersive experience, visit the Historic Charleston Supper Club. What do locals do in an area like this? Spend time with friends and family at Waterfront Park where kids splash in the fountains and residents relax in the grass. Each year, the Dock Street Theatre is a must for those attending the annual Spoleto Festival.
