Dallas is a sprawling metropolis in north Texas, yet it’s no expanse of concrete, with the Trinity River cutting through the city center and manicured green spaces and tree-lined parks scattered around downtown. The city is home to some of Texas’ most well-known sports teams and a vibrant arts scene. Among the eight art museums and 20 blocks of galleries is the Dallas Museum of Art, one of the largest in the country, with more than 20,000 works by Texas artists and international creators.

The Dallas Park System is also an integral element of the city, and well-kept green spaces cover nearly 20,000 acres of urban terrain. Klyde Warren Park is tucked between skyscrapers and hosts food trucks, outdoor movies, and fitness events each week, and the looped trail at waterfront White Rock Lake Park brings pedestrians and bikers through an oasis of oak and pecan trees.

The weather in Dallas can vary greatly depending on the season. Summers are hot and humid, while winters are cold and dry. On a summer day, you can take a break from the heat to admire rare gems and minerals at the five-story Perot Museum of Nature and Science. December through January Dallas is in full holiday mode, with activities like ice skating and the annual Dallas Holiday Parade.

Spring’s warm and rainy weather is an ideal time to visit the 66-acre Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, when the vibrant blooms of the seasonal wildflowers in the designated color garden will be on display. Cool autumn weather brings out the city’s fall foliage, making it an ideal time to go to the Scyene Overlook for a panoramic view of the Great Trinity Forest’s hardwoods, now clad in bright red and orange shades.

Nasher Sculpture Center

The 2.5-acre Nasher Sculpture Center in the heart of downtown Dallas’ Arts District is home to more than 300 sculptures, displayed both indoors and outdoors. Manicured landscaping and elegant fountains sit alongside changing exhibitions and permanent works by internationally renowned artists.

Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge

For some of the best views of the Dallas skyline, meander along the pedestrian area that skirts the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. A tall, circular overlay covers the bridge and the Trinity River below it, an interesting architectural piece that complements the city skyline. The best time to visit is right after sunset, when the buildings start to light up.

Bishop Arts District

The Bishop Arts District is an oasis for independent wares, with side alleys decorated in vivid murals. This shopping area is more than 100 years old, one of the most historic corners of downtown. Here you’ll find vintage delights at local record shops and comic book stores, as well as new, one-of-a-kind pieces at boutiques selling hand-crafted jewelry and home decor.
