Data sharing with Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in the United Kingdom

Why we share data with with HMRC

As a company that facilitates payments in the UK, we are legally required to provide a limited amount of data about transactions that take place on the Airbnb platform to Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) when requested.

What data will be shared

Data for all transactions on the platform during the 2017/18 and 2018/19 tax years, that took place in relation to either:

  • A listing in the UK or,
  • A listing owned by a Host that’s required to pay tax in the UK

Which hosts does this apply to

This only applies to hosts with a listing in the UK or who are required to pay tax in the UK, and who were active on the platform during the 2017/18 and 2018/19 tax years.

Future requests

We will provide data if HMRC makes similar requests for information in future.

Other companies HMRC works with

HMRC is working in partnership with companies across the sector, as people with additional, non-PAYE income streams may not be fully aware of their tax obligations.

Data security

We understand that you may have privacy concerns about personal data being shared with HMRC. In compliance with European privacy regulations, (GDPR), your data is encrypted before being shared. HMRC has also assured that it will undertake standard, secure processes to review the data.
