Your guide to North Georgia Mountains
All About North Georgia Mountains
The North Georgia Mountains are part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which stretch from Pennsylvania to Georgia, and are so called because their imposing peaks undulate on the horizon like deep blue waves. Some of the mountains within the North Georgia Mountain range are over a billion years old. Their highest peak, Brasstown Bald, reaches nearly 5,000 feet in elevation, offering sweeping views of the majestic surrounding landscape. There’s also Stone Mountain Park, which includes a massive granite pluton formed by a geological folding process over 350 million years ago. Beyond the natural terrain, discover a historical spectacle called the Crossroads — a village seemingly trapped in time in the 1870s — catch a show at the Hart County Community Theatre, or take a tour around a local winery for a true taste of the region.
The best time to stay in a vacation rental in North Georgia Mountains
The best time to stay at a vacation rental in the North Georgia Mountains is in May, June, and September, as these months offer temperate weather for hiking, walking, and enjoying the landscape. Spring is also a lovely time to visit, when the wildlife comes out of hibernation and the scenery comes alive with wildflowers. The warmer summer months are best for floating on the river under clear skies, hiking in the mountains, and boating on the lake. If you visit during the fall, prepare to be blown away by the beautiful colors of the changing leaves. A winter stay in the mountains is a cozy way to celebrate the holidays, with a crackling fire providing a just reward for a chilly hike.
Top things to do in North Georgia Mountains
Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest
The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest is home to a double loop trail with striking views. The two connecting routes are the Keown Falls Loop and the John Mountains Loop, which is a five-mile trail with an elevation gain of over 1,000 feet. Along the way, there are plenty of waterfalls to see and picnic tables with grills where you can stop and refuel.
Blue Ridge Scenic Railway
Spend a day riding the train down the Toccoa River. Start your journey in Downtown Blue Ridge and take the scenic route for four hours through 26 miles of magnificent mountain landscape. You’ll zigzag between small towns including McCaysville and Copperhill and make pit stops along the way to see the sights. Here, the journey is just as remarkable as the destination.
Tubing the Chattahoochee River
Cool off in the Chattahoochee River with a sun-drenched afternoon of tubing. Float along downstream for a (mostly) smooth and relaxing ride, with just a few quick twists and turns to keep it exciting. If you’re making the trip here in the fall, don’t forget to check out the lively Oktoberfest celebrations that take place in the mountain town of Helen every October.
