Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary
Every parrot has a story. You’ll learn all about our rainbow-colored rescues in Kona’s only parrot sanctuary. We’ll start with our mission: to give every displaced parrot a nutritious diet, large space to fly, and a safe place to interact with other parrots (and people). Next, we'll take a walk around the sanctuary, where you can get to know the range of personalities of cockatoos, lovebirds, macaws, and more species. Throughout the tour, you will have many photo opportunities, especially with our well-trained parrots. Other things to note: Wear casual clothes, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and bring a camera. Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary is also home to two rescue dogs, two Holstein cows and two sulcata tortoise. While we like to keep our group sizes small to enhance a personal experience, we are open to hosting larger family/friend groups with more than six individuals.

Aloha and Welcome as we gather around the information table at Sharkey's 100-year old farmhouse in the historic plantation village of Papaikou. Long, heavy vanilla vines grow up the cacao trees, nature's perfect trellis! We'll show you how each vanilla orchid is delicately hand-pollinated to produce long "hands" of vanilla beans. We'll then proceed to the "Slab" where the pods are 'cracked' before the fermentation process. Next we move into the greenhouse where flats of newly planted seedlings just beginning their journey grow alongside large screens filled with coffee and cacao beans slowly drying to perfection. Finally we'll move into our certified Chocolate Kitchen where the Magic happens! Who wants a taste? Free samples! Vegan Hawaii Cooking Class/local produce
This is a hands-on experience that starts with an introduction about Hawaiian plants and fruit trees and a tour of the sanctuary grounds. Once everyone gets acquainted with one another, we will harvest from our garden and head to the pool-side, open air kitchen to prepare the food we've gathered. We have a 3 mile coastline view from the kitchen area, and you can cool off with your feet in the pool. Dinner classes include Kona's breathtaking sunsets at no extra cost! Each experience will focus on a different type of cuisine, (Italian, Thai, Indian, Mexican, etc.) but each will consist of a type of salad, a main course (usually involving a starch, i.e. grain, pasta, bread, etc.), and a light dessert. We will, of course, be using as many vegetables as possible, and plenty of fruit as well, with as much locally grown produce as we have at any given time of year. As we prepare the food, there will be instructions and lessons on knife handling, small appliance use, how best to cut ingredients, what parts of fruits and vegetables to use, and what to compost. For those interested, it is perfectly fine to bring your own bottle of wine/beer. You will leave with new cooking skills, a full belly, and likely a few new friends. Voila!! Other things to note Banyan Tree Sanctuary Guest House has six guest accommodations if you would like to stay with us, or you are welcome to come to the vegan cooking class independently. This is an open air kitchen so bring bug spray and wear long pants if you are susceptible to being bitten.
Night Manta Adventure
You'll check in approximately 45 minutes before sunset in order to get in position for an amazing Kona sunset. You'll gear up and be briefed on ocean safety and etiquette then be off for a 20-30 minute boat ride to the giant manta rays. Once the sun goes down and it gets dark enough you'll jump in the water to experience an under water ballet of a lifetime. The giant manta rays of Kona will come so close they might even bump into you during the show, Not to worry, they are completely harmless. Other things to note You don't have to be a diver or an expert swimmer to enjoy this experience.
