Experience the Northernlights in a small car
BorealisExpedition is a local business providing guided northern lights tours in the Tromsø area. With a knowledge about the local area and by web cam, I will do my best to find this nights best area for viewing the northernlights. I will also try to drive you to the best spots for a scenic view where we can take pictures. Sometimes the chance of a clear sky is low, in that case I check the latest weather report at 5 pm If you want to enjoy the northern lights and avoid crowds, come with me on a trip. Join the Northern Lights experience in Tromsø and the surrounding area with a group of a maximum of six people! I have a meeting place at Kirkegata 2 (Tourist Shop Tromsø) 5.50 pm close to the harbor. Sometimes the northern lights can start early so it is important that we drive as agreed at 6.00 pm After a while I serve hot drinks (hot chocolate, coffee, tea) and some snacks. You can also borrow thermal suits and tripods. Of course, I have professional photography equipment with me so I can take pictures and portraits under the northern lights. At the end of the tour, I drop you off at your hotel/apartment near the city center of Tromsø.

Exclusive hunt for the northern lights
The private 2/4 person excursion starts in the evening at 7:00 pm and lasts for 5-6 hours. During the months with evening darkness (September to April) we are hunting clear skies to see if we can get a glims of the northern lights. The excursion starts by the Arctic Cathedral on the mainland side of Tromsø, and we will drive to one of the largest islands in Norway, Kvaløya (the Whale Island). On Kvaløya we are going to visit Ersfjorden, one of many fjords with a fantastic view of the open sea. After Ersfjorden we will drive to one of the most beautiful beaches in the north - the Grøtfjorden beach. You might (on some not to cold evenings) feel like a dip in the Barents sea, bring a towel and get a diploma :-) There are going to be several shorter stops along the way, and one main stop in Grøtfjorden where we eat a pre-prepared meal and have a hot drink. Other things to note We’ll have a dialogue before we head out regarding your expectations. We have a lot of choices depending on the weather and what you want to do. The northern lights are a natural phenomenon, meaning there is no guarantee that we will see them, but we will do our best. If you are unsure how to dress - send me a message. We will be spending some time outdoors.

Dates are flexible, subject to planning. This is a great opportunity for people who don't ski to access the winter mountains but would like to enjoy the amazing raw nature in the wilderness. We meet in the parking lot where we introduce each other and talk about the plan over a map. After a short intro about the equipment and the itinerary we will get started and go to the famously beautiful mountain called Ryten (alternative mountains are possible). Then at a comfortable pace we will walk up to the top of the mountain and enjoy breathtaking nature and views. We have a high chance to see local wildlife, such as eagles and grouse. Depending on the physical ability and fitness of the group, weather and snow conditions, the tour will vary between 4,5 and 6,5hours.

On snowshoes in the Arctic
A daytime hike, where I will pick you up by the Arctic Cathedral at 10:00 AM. We will head for the cable car in Tromsdalen where we will get a ride up, and to the mountain Storsteinen at 420m. From here we will walk to the top of the Fløya mountain at 671m. We will make a few stops along the way - one of them by an old stone cabin built more than 100 years ago in 1907. From here we continue up the mountain, the last part is usually a 25-30 minutes walk. At the peak, we have a closer look at the scenery, drink something hot before we head down the same way towards the top station of the cable car. The way down is done along the 1209 steps Sherpa path opened in 2019. The path is done without snowshoes and can be perceived as steep during the winter because of snow covering the stairs- the snow also makes it possible to slide down some sections if the conditions are right. If the stairs are unusable due to ice and/or snow we go down the same way we came up. We will adapt the pace to the group, but this is a level 4 hike, meaning you will have to make an effort to get to the top. There is no guarantee that we will reach the top due to weather and physical condition in the group, but usually, we do. If the cable car is closed due to weather/wind we have the option to walk up the 4km trail leading to the top. This makes the excursion about an hour longer.
