A small city on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, Ocean Beach combines the sights and beauty of a beach town with historic landmarks. Look to the horizon where dolphins play in the waves, go snorkeling amongst the hulls of sunken ships in the country’s largest man-made reefs, and while away days cycling through pretty wooded trails. For a touch of resort life, head to any of the scenic golf courses that dot the area, or charter a yacht and set sail on the water. Nearby, Fort Morgan beckons with a history lesson, or for adrenaline-seekers, cast your attention towards the area’s zip lines and waterparks. Orange Beach knows how to throw an event, too. You’ll find festivals celebrating yachts, shimp, beer, oysters, and music, among other themes — it feels like there’s always something going on in Orange Beach.

Sunny weather and tons of local events make summer an optimal time to visit. The caveat is that it gets crowded this time of year, especially along the more popular beaches. And though hot, summers on the Gulf can be humid and rainy. March, April, and May see weather warm enough for the beach, and fewer people — with the exception being during Spring Break. In autumn, the weather should stay mild enough to spend time outside hiking, cycling, or golfing, though it may be a little cold for swimming. Seafood fans should aim for a trip in time for the National Shrimp Festival in October, or the Oyster Cook-Off and Craft Beer Weekend in November. Over the winter, the town gets quieter, though remains a perennial destination for snowbirds looking to escape chillier climates.

Golf on the Gulf

With 16 golf courses to choose from in and around Orange Beach, golfing on the gulf has never been so within reach. Tee off on scenic courses swathed in perfect greens and blues. From mini putt to driving ranges to the whole 18-hole fanfare, there’s a course here no matter your experience level.

Fort Morgan

Standing proud against the skyline since 1819, Fort Morgan is a landmark stone fort that played a pivotal role in the Battle of Mobile Bay, and later served as a defense fortress in the World Wars. Learn about the history of these battles and the role of coastal fortifications as you tour around. The area around Fort Morgan is also a scenic lookout spot, with its own beach, boat launch, and walking trails.

Snorkeling and shore diving

Head to Perdido Pass Bridge in Orange Beach for some of the best snorkeling in the region. Alongside crabs scuttling around the rocks and tropical fish aplenty, you can dive to the wreckage site of a Spanish Rum Runner ship that sank in 1920.
