Your guide to Raglan

All About Raglan

The town of Raglan is situated on the southern shores of Raglan Harbour, which extends north to Glen Afton on New Zealand’s North Island and is one of three inlets along the Waikato coast. Initially known by its Māori name of Whāingaroa — ‘the long pursuit’ — Raglan is known for its volcanic black sand beaches, dunes, and dune-damned lakes to the north of the harbor mouth. The now-dormant Mount Karioi volcano lies to the southwest of the township, and hikers take to the slopes for incredible views — you can see as far as Mount Taranaki on a clear day.

Raglan’s coastal waters are considered some of the best in the world by surfers, and there are a series of breaks in the local area, including Whale Bay, Indicators, Vortex Bay, and Manu Bay. Bridal Veil Falls and Lake Disappear southeast of Raglan are also both big draws, and the sunsets at the Wainui Reserve are the stuff of postcards.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Raglan

Raglan experiences mild temperatures throughout the year, but they’re at their highest during the summer months of January to March and dip in the winter months of June, July, and August.

Summer accommodation in Raglan is ideal for surfers, backpackers, and nature lovers. There’s a variety of local stalls and produce at Raglan’s summer markets and farmers’ markets, and you’ll find stunning walks through forests and over dedicated tracks that offer amazing clear views on sunny days. An annual music festival takes place in midsummer, featuring a range of local and international acts across four stages.

If you’re visiting Raglan during spring or fall, keep an ear out for annual fashion and art festivals, as well as regular art workshops.

Top things to do in Raglan

Bridal Veil Falls

Fifteen minutes to the southeast of Raglan, the giant Bridal Veil Falls drop into a lagoon 180 feet below, one of the most stunning falls in the country. They’re easily accessible on foot from Raglan town center via a short nature walk. You’ll pass by several viewing platforms where you can see the cascade from various perspectives, and you can venture up to the top platform and look down onto the falls.

Te Toto Gorge Lookout

On your way to Ruapuke Beach, you’ll find the picturesque Te Toto Gorge Lookout. This is the site of three natural coastal amphitheaters, one of which is home to large Māori Gardens. The views of the former gardens are amazing and, if you venture up to the wooden platform, you’ll be rewarded with commanding vistas of the Raglan coastline too.

Kawhia Hot Water Beach

Just an hour away from Raglan, there’s a truly unique beach — there are natural geothermal hot springs under the sand. Visit within two hours either side of low tide to be able to dig your own beach hot tub in and around the dunes and headland. As the tide comes in, your DIY tub will fill up with soothing hot water.
