Surf Lessons - Beginners // Azores
We'll meet at the Black Sand Box office or at the beach, best for the day. At the surfschool van we grab our gear and head out to a secluded area with plenty of great beginner waves. The lesson starts on the sand, where I’ll teach you surf techniques and the important things you need to know to be safe and successful at surfing. I’ll also cover local surf culture and etiquette so that you stay on the right side of your fellow surfers. When ready, we’ll paddle out and spend the rest of our time in the ocean, enjoying the Azorean waves! Before every lesson I look at the surf forecast and make sure it is safe for first timers. Have in mind that the START TIME for this experience might vary depending on the surf conditions and the low tide of the day. Other things to note Black Sand Box (Surf) is licensed by the Government of the Azores as a tourist maritime operator (OMT-16/2018). We have insurances of civil liability and personal accident!

Hiking With Happy Rescued Donkeys
Join us for an authentically unique experience, touring Agua de Alto via a 1.5 mile hike, side by side our happy, rescued donkeys. At Donkeys and Friends, we believe, and have seen firsthand how responsible tourism helps visitors engage more deeply with the Azores, and we strive to share our community through the eyes of locals, in the most traditional of fashions. Our mission is to help and protect donkeys in need of rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming. Donkeys walk at the same speed as humans, about four miles per hour. Moving is vital to their ongoing health. In the wild, these animals can be found traveling 10 to 20 kilometers a day as they wander around grazing. And that’s where we need your help! These daily hiking adventures keep our big-eared friends healthy, while unleashing their natural curiosity and wonder. On this excursion, you will have the opportunity to stroll alongside Gabriela, Joaquin de Horta, Esperanca, Edward, and the always-entertaining Shetland pony, Kiwi! We will explore Agua de Alto, where they say it’s always sunny, at a donkey’s pace, reviling in the laid back pace that marks these relaxed islands. We’ll let you in on the secret paths to the best beaches on the south side of the island, make a pit stop for coffee and a chance to brush up on your Portuguese. We hope you’ll spend part of your visit with us and our donkey friends.

Taste the life of a local dairy farmer
Don't see a date you want? Request it! We'll do everything in our power to welcome you that day. The tour can change, as we’re a working farm so anything might come up and we’ll take you along to shadow us. However, the typical tour goes something like this: We set you up with mud boots and take you Azorean style to the pasture where our adult cows are grazing. There, in the center of all our cows, you’ll understand why we’re a sustainable dairy farm all while petting our cows and experiencing each of their unique behavior. Then you’ll help us walk the cows from pasture to the milking barn (just like you see other farmers do on the streets throughout the island - the so called "cow jams"). While the cows snack at the milking barn, we’ll take you through a scenic drive to meet our teenage cows. Afterwards, you can see the baby calves and then we begin the milking where you are welcome to experience milking a cow yourself by hand and with the machine. We end with a picnic-style tasting of the fresh milk you just milked and other local delights. The tour starts between 3:30pm - 4:30pm, depending on the time of year, and lasts about 2.5 – 3 hours. Other things to note: Our tour is offered rain or shine as the idea is to get a taste of an Azorean farmer's life...our work must go on no matter what the weather. We do however, do what we can to keep you within your comfort limits.
