Your guide to Smiths Falls

All About Smiths Falls

Located in Eastern Ontario about an hour south of Ottawa, Smiths Falls is most famous for the Rideau Canal, which runs through the center of town. In the early 19th century, the impressive waterfall from which the town got its name was diverted to build the canal. Decades later, the waterway became a UNESCO World Heritage site, and today, Smiths Falls is known for its canal boats and recreational trails. The popular 65-mile, multi-use Cataraqui Trail runs along the Canada National Railway and is inhabited by wildlife such as rabbits, foxes, and otters. In town, you’ll find a small collection of boutiques and antique stores, along with restaurants and an acclaimed craft brewery. There are also plenty of beaches, and fishing on the Rideau and nearby lakes.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Smiths Falls

The ideal time to rent in Smiths Falls is from May to September. The hottest months are from June through August, which are the most popular time for families and summer travelers. December through February is when you are most likely to see snow on the ground, so be prepared for temperatures to be cold during the day and below freezing at night. But it’s worth it because for a whole month, beginning in late November, the Smiths Falls Celebration of Lights rings in the holiday season with a beautiful light display and entertainment at Centennial Park.

Top things to do in Smiths Falls

Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario

Stretching across 10 acres, the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario includes the old Smiths Falls train terminal and railway houses, in addition to various rail stores and warehouses. You’ll find antique train engines, passenger and dining cars, two authentic cabooses, and a car for traveling dentists — all beautifully restored to their original condition.

Heritage House Museum

This historic 19th-century Georgian-style home was built for a local mill owner in the town in the grounds on the Rideau Canal waterway at Old Sly’s Lock Station. Restored to its former beauty, it is now a community museum and heritage house. It hosts an array of interesting displays, local artifacts, exhibits, and art shows that tell the story of the town. Marvel at the period rooms, an indoor brick bake oven, and a unique two-story privy.

The Cataraqui Trail

This popular trail is open all year round for hiking, horseback riding, and cycling. In the winter, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers flock to its wide, easy paths. The trail passes through woodland, farmland, wetlands, and waterways. The UNESCO Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve is located about halfway along the trail, and you can cross the Rideau Canal at Chaffey’s Locks over a 1912 railway trestle. Cataraqui is also intersected by the K&P Rail Trail and the Rideau Trail.
