Your guide to Lake Lanier

All About Lake Lanier

Lake Lanier, tucked between Gainesville and Buford, is a peaceful destination in the hills of Northern Georgia. This lake was a project intended to help develop America’s waterways during World War II; in the 1950s, the Buford Dam was completed and formed Lake Lanier. Today, this oasis is home to more than 53,000 residents who live across five counties.

Lake Lanier is one of the most popular lakes in the Southeast and is the largest lake in Georgia. It’s home to more than 700 miles of beaches stretching across 38,000 acres. Experience the solitude of the mountains, the majesty of the waterfalls, and the beauty of the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers as you enjoy a stay in one of the Lake Lanier cabins or house rentals. Lake Lanier has more than 45 parks and 10 campgrounds within its vicinity and is a fishing destination, welcoming fishers and anglers who can’t get enough of the lake’s provisions.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Lake Lanier

Beginning in March, the lake is warm enough to swim in, but the main swimming season starts in May. Once you settle into your Lake Lanier cabin, the water activities nearby are plentiful and include boating and kayaking. After Labor Day weekend the park is less busy — so if you’re looking to avoid crowds, this could be a great opportunity to visit, as the temperatures stay warm here through October. During the wintertime, visitors come here for snow tubing, carnival rides, and ice skating. Golfing is a year-round activity at the lake. Check local events calendars for live music, beach cruises, and full moon festivities throughout the year.

Top things to do in Lake Lanier

Atlanta’s Botanical Garden, Gainesville

An extension of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Gainesville garden is one of the largest nature conservation nurseries in the Southeast. It’s only a short drive from Lake Lanier and is a tropical paradise. The garden has more than 30 acres to explore plus creative installations, cocktail nights, and exhibits for kids.

The Buford Dam Trail

At the Buford Dam Trail, you’ll be able to walk behind the dam that created Lake Lanier while taking in views of the Chattahoochee River. Access this trail via the Lower Overlook Park to avoid parking fees. As you hike this trail you’ll experience stunning views, cross beautiful bridges, and maybe even spot some woodland creatures.

Downtown Burford

After a relaxing few days out in nature, shift gears and explore Downtown Buford. Only a 22-minute drive from Lake Lanier, this small town has great art galleries, shops, taverns, and event halls to explore.
