The village first belonged to the Counts of Lenzburg, before finally being inherited by the Counts of Kyburg. Around 1230, the Kyburgers founded the actual town of Mellingen on the left bank of the Reuss and had a ring wall built. A bridge has existed over the river since at least 1253. The Habsburgs, who had become sovereign in 1273, granted Mellingen city rights in 1296. Mellingen enjoys a large number of visitors every day.
