Centurion’s winters, which last from May to September, are typically dry and mild, while the summertime, occurring from October to February, tends to be relatively hot and humid. During the rainy season, there can be severe thunderstorms, so pack an umbrella — it will be worth it to see all the lush gardens and vegetation in full bloom. Spring, which is from August to October, and autumn, lasting from February to April, are generally milder in weather, and between flowering trees and autumn leaves, they make very picturesque times to visit Centurion.

The open-air Locrate Market thrums with the buzz of live music and the energy of local designers, artisans, chefs, and entrepreneurs who sell all kinds of creations from their stalls. While there are a few international retailers around here, the real draw is in the local talent, and in the beautiful handcrafted pieces that you won’t find anywhere else.

Sterkfontein Caves

The Sterkfontein Caves sit in the center of the Cradle of Civilization, and is one of the world’s foremost excavation sites. The World Heritage Site is where some of the most important fossil discoveries have been found. Navigate the nooks and crannies of the underground caves, walking through 4 million years of history as you go.

Hennops Hiking Trail

Centuries-old trees, deep gorges, and unspoiled nature greet you as you walk along the Hennops Hiking Trail. Take in the scenery as you follow the burbling river through to the mountains, past a former mining settlement, and over suspension bridges offering jaw-dropping vistas. Keep your eyes out for birds and zebras as you go, and be sure to pack a picnic for a scenic al fresco lunch. If you’re coming from Centurion, the closest trail is the River Trail, though you can easily connect to the other, longer trails once inside the park.
