Your guide to Eufaula

All About Eufaula

Eufaula is a small town on the shore of Lake Eufaula, Oklahoma’s largest lake and one of the largest human-made lakes in the world. Often referred to as the Gentle Giant because of its calm waters, Lake Eufaula is perfect for swimming, boating, and paddleboarding. Alongside it is the Damsite ATV Trail, where thrill-seekers can tear through 300 acres of rolling dunes and forest-lined paths.

After a day on the water, step into the past in downtown Eufaula, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Most of the buildings that make up the main street — now home to boutiques, antique shops, and an art gallery — are the same structures from the town’s development in the late 1800s. Enjoy a plate of classic southern barbeque before stopping by the charming, multi-purpose entertainment space, where live concerts and community art classes are held.

When is the best time to stay in a vacation rental in Eufaula?

Summer is by far the most popular season in Lake Eufaula, when the sun warms up the lake to ideal conditions for swimming and water sports. Fourth of July is a multi-day celebration in Eufaula, with community festivities and nightly fireworks over the lake that you can watch from a rented boat or the shore. Later in the month, during the last full weekend in July, the city hosts its Whole Hawg Days carnival, where locals compete in a BBQ cook-off and car enthusiasts showcase their collections of vintage cars. Fishing tournaments are held on the lake nearly every weekend from mid-summer to early fall. Things slow down in fall and winter as the temperature drops, but it never gets too cold in Eufaula and it rarely snows, so you can enjoy the hiking trails around the lake all winter long.

What are the top things to do in Eufaula?

Lake Eufaula State Park

Just over 10 minutes north of town, Lake Eufaula State Park is home to several hiking and mountain biking trails along the reservoir where you might be lucky enough to spot herons, ospreys, and deer. There is a golf course inside the state park, and the lake is perfect for water sports and fishing for bass, sunfish, and catfish.

Standing Rock

In the center of Lake Eufaula is one of the most iconic and mythic spots in the region. Standing Rock is a massive stone that was once used as a marker by Indigenous tribes, which, depending on which legend you believe, points towards the treasure of Spanish conquistadors or a 19th century rancher. Today, the rock is completely submerged due to the construction of the Eufaula Dam, but you can still spot the tip during the dry season. Snorkels are available to rent for visitors who want to see the stone up close.

Five Civilized Tribes Museum

Located in nearby Muskogee, this museum preserves and educates visitors on the history and culture of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee, and Seminole tribes. In addition to a number of educational exhibits, the museum also holds a huge collection from a famous Muskogee-Seminole painter, whose works feature a blend of contemporary and indigenous artistic styles and themes.
